HDB Power Trip: Who to Call and What to Do

Power out in your HDB flat? Stay calm. Here is the immediate response, how to tell SP Services from a private electrician, and what to expect when help arrives.

HDB Power Trip: Who to Call and What to Do

Your HDB flat's power has just tripped. The lights are out, the aircon has stopped, and the fridge has gone quiet. Do not panic. This is one of the most common household issues in Singapore, and getting your power back is straightforward once you know who to call and what to do.

This guide is for HDB homeowners dealing with a power trip. It covers the immediate response, how to decide between SP Services and a private electrician, and what to expect when help arrives.

First steps when your HDB power trips

Before reaching for the phone, take these quick steps to size up the situation.

  • Check whether it is just your flat. Look out the window or step into the common corridor. If your neighbours' lights are on, the issue is most likely inside your flat.
  • Open your DB box. It is usually a grey metal panel near your front door. Look for a switch in the middle or off position; that is your tripped breaker.
  • Try a basic reset. Switch off all appliances first, then push the tripped breaker firmly to off, then back to on. If it holds, reconnect appliances one at a time to find what caused the trip.
  • Note any warning signs. Burning smells, scorch marks on outlets, warm spots on walls, or a breaker that trips right after reset all mean the issue needs a professional.

SP Services vs electrician: who handles what

This is the most common point of confusion during an HDB power trip. Here is the clear split.

SP Services handles supply-side issues. They are responsible for the electricity supply network up to and including your meter. Call them at 1800-778-8888 if the entire block or floor has lost power; your DB box shows no tripped breakers but you have no power; you see damage to external electrical infrastructure; or your meter appears faulty. SP Services investigate at no charge. If the fault is on their side, they repair it. If the supply is fine, they tell you to call a private electrician.

A private electrician handles internal faults, everything from your DB box inward. Call an electrician if a breaker in your DB box has tripped; only your flat is affected while neighbours have power; you have a burning smell, sparking, or scorching from outlets; your breaker keeps tripping after reset; or you need an issue resolved outside SP Services' scope.

How to check if it is a supply or internal issue

Use this quick decision guide.

  • Neighbours have power and your DB box shows a tripped switch: internal fault. Call an electrician.
  • Neighbours have power but no switches are tripped in your DB box: could be supply-side (meter or incoming cable). Start with SP Services.
  • Neighbours also have no power: area-wide outage. Call SP Services.
  • Partial power, some rooms working and others not: an individual MCB has tripped, an internal fault on that circuit. Call an electrician if a reset does not hold.

What an electrician will do when they arrive

Knowing what to expect helps you judge whether the work is reasonable and properly done.

  • Step 1: visual inspection of the DB box for signs of damage, overheating, or loose connections.
  • Step 2: circuit testing with a multimeter and insulation resistance tester to find the faulty circuit, measuring resistance and checking for earth leakage.
  • Step 3: fault isolation, systematically testing sections of the affected circuit to pinpoint the exact fault, whether in the wiring, at an outlet, or in a connected appliance.
  • Step 4: repair, which might mean replacing a faulty MCB or RCCB, repairing or replacing a damaged outlet, tightening loose connections, or recommending further work like rewiring a section.
  • Step 5: testing and certification, confirming the fault is cleared, checking the RCCB trips correctly, and making sure all connections are secure.

How long it takes

A straightforward diagnosis and repair usually takes 30 minutes to 1 hour. More complex issues, especially intermittent earth leakage faults, can take longer.

Preventing future power trips in your HDB

Once the immediate trip is sorted, these measures cut the chance of it happening again.

  • Spread your load across circuits. Do not run several high-power appliances on the same circuit. If your flat has limited circuits, consider dedicated circuits for heavy-draw appliances like air conditioners and water heaters.
  • Test your RCCB monthly. Press the test button; it should trip immediately. If it does not, have it checked.
  • Maintain your appliances. Worn power cords, damaged plugs, or internal faults are common trip causes. Replace damaged cords promptly and service appliances on schedule.
  • Get older wiring inspected. If your flat is more than 20 years old and the wiring has never been checked, a professional assessment can catch degrading insulation before it causes repeated trips.
  • Avoid daisy-chaining extension cords. Plugging one cord into another raises resistance and fire risk. Use a single, appropriately rated power strip for multiple low-power devices.

Do I call SP Services or an electrician for HDB power trips?

It depends on where the fault sits. SP Services handles the supply network up to the point it enters your flat, so they deal with area-wide outages, damaged supply cables, faulty meters, and incoming supply problems. Their 24-hour emergency number is 1800-778-8888.

A private electrician handles everything from your DB box inward: tripped breakers, faulty internal wiring, sparking or burning outlets, and appliance-related faults. The quickest way to tell is to check your DB box. If you find a tripped breaker, the problem is internal and you need an electrician. If no breakers have tripped but you still have no power, check whether your neighbours have power.

If the whole block or floor is affected, call SP Services. If only your flat is dark while neighbours have power and no breakers are tripped, the issue could be at the incoming supply or meter, so start with SP Services. A common mistake is calling SP Services for internal faults, which wastes time since they cannot and will not work on your internal wiring.

How quickly can an electrician respond to a power trip?

Response times vary with the time of day and the electrician's workload. During normal business hours (roughly 9am to 6pm on weekdays), most electricians arrive within 1 to 3 hours of your call. For after-hours, weekend, and public holiday call-outs, it may be longer, typically 1 to 4 hours, though 24-hour emergency services aim to respond faster.

Time on site to diagnose and fix is usually 30 minutes to 1 hour for straightforward issues like a faulty MCB or a tripped RCCB caused by an identifiable appliance. More complex wiring faults or intermittent earth leakage can take longer.

When you call, clear information speeds things up. Tell the electrician whether the whole flat is out or just part of it, which breaker tripped (MCB or RCCB), whether you smell burning or see scorch marks, and whether you have already tried resetting.

What causes power trips specifically in HDB flats?

HDB flats have some traits that make certain trips more likely. Older flats (built before the 2000s) often have fewer circuits than modern usage demands. A typical 1980s or 1990s flat might have only 6 to 8 circuits, so more appliances share each one, which raises the chance of overload trips.

Wiring age is another HDB-specific factor. Many flats still have original wiring from 20 to 40 years ago. The PVC insulation on these cables degrades in Singapore's heat and humidity, leading to earth leakage that trips the RCCB or ELCB. This degradation is gradual and may show only as occasional tripping at first, becoming more frequent over time.

HDB flats also have specific RCCB and ELCB setups. Older flats may have a single ELCB covering all circuits, so any earth leakage on any circuit trips the whole flat. Newer setups use RCCBs that may cover groups of circuits, limiting the impact.

Is there a charge for SP Services power trip investigation?

SP Services does not charge for investigating supply-side issues affecting your HDB flat. If you call their 24-hour hotline (1800-778-8888) and the problem turns out to be on their side, the investigation and repair are handled at no cost to you.

If their technician finds the issue is internal to your flat, they will tell you to contact a private electrician. You are not charged for the SP Services visit in that case either, but you then pay a private electrician to diagnose and repair your internal system.

Remember that SP Services' scope is strictly the supply network and metering. They will not open your DB box, test your circuits, or repair any internal wiring. That is why it helps to check your DB box yourself before calling.

Can I fix an HDB power trip myself?

You can safely do some basic troubleshooting, but there are clear limits. Safe DIY steps include resetting a tripped breaker, identifying a faulty appliance by unplugging devices and reconnecting them one at a time, and checking whether the issue is supply-side by seeing if your neighbours have power.

What you should not do: open the DB box beyond the cover panel, touch any wiring or connections inside it, replace a circuit breaker or fuse yourself, or try to bypass a tripping breaker. Under the Electricity Act, any electrical installation work in Singapore must be done by a Licensed Electrical Worker (LEW).

If your basic troubleshooting does not clear the trip, contact a licensed electrician.

What if my power trips at night: is there 24-hour service?

Yes, 24-hour electrical services are available in Singapore for HDB power trips outside normal business hours. Both SP Services and private electricians offer round-the-clock emergency response.

After-hours service does cost more. Most electricians add a surcharge of 50 to 100 per cent on standard rates for call-outs between 6pm and 9am, on weekends, and on public holidays. For a night-time trip, the total including diagnosis and a simple repair might be S$150 to S$400.

Whether to call at night or wait until morning depends on the situation. If the whole flat is without power, if there is a burning smell, or if someone in the household relies on medical equipment, calling for immediate help is justified. If only one circuit is affected and you can manage through the night, waiting saves the surcharge.
