Low Water Pressure in Your Shower? Causes and Fixes for Singapore Flats
Weak shower flow in your Singapore flat? Here are the real causes, from clogged heads to storage-pump issues, plus simple fixes and when to call a plumber.

Low water pressure in a Singapore shower is usually caused by a clogged shower head, a partly closed stopcock or angle valve, a scale build-up in the pipes, or an issue with a water heater or booster pump. Most cases are cheap and quick to fix at home by cleaning the shower head or opening a valve fully. If the whole flat is affected or the problem started suddenly across multiple taps, the cause is likely upstream and worth a plumber's eye.
Singapore's mains water pressure is generally strong and reliable, so a weak shower is almost always a local problem inside your unit rather than a supply failure from PUB. HDB flats, condos and landed homes each have slightly different setups, but the troubleshooting logic is the same: work from the shower head backwards to the water heater, the valves, and finally the pipes.
Why is only my shower weak when the taps are fine?
If your kitchen and basin taps run strongly but the shower dribbles, the fault is almost certainly at the shower itself, not the flat's supply. The two most common culprits are a clogged shower head and a water heater that is throttling the hot side.
Mineral scale and limescale slowly block the tiny nozzles on a shower head. In Singapore the water is treated and relatively soft, but soap residue, sediment and old rubber washers still clog heads over the years, especially on rainfall-style heads with many small holes.
- Clogged shower head nozzles: the single most common cause of weak shower flow.
- Instant heater flow restriction: many instant water heaters limit flow to heat the water fast, so hot-only weakness is normal to a degree.
- Kinked or crushed shower hose: a bent hose behind a handheld head chokes the flow.
- A partly closed angle valve under or behind the shower mixer.
How do I clean a clogged shower head?
Cleaning a shower head is the first thing to try and it fixes a surprising number of cases for free. You do not need a plumber for this.
Soak the head in a mix of white vinegar and warm water to dissolve scale, then scrub the nozzles. For a fixed head you cannot remove, tie a bag of vinegar around it so the nozzles sit submerged.
- Unscrew the shower head or handheld head from the hose.
- Soak it in a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and warm water for 30 to 60 minutes.
- Rub the rubber nozzles with your thumb to pop out loosened scale.
- Rinse, check for a trapped rubber washer or filter screen, and refit.
- Run the shower and compare the flow before and after.
Could my water heater be the problem?
Yes, and this is common in HDB flats and condos that use instant (tankless) electric heaters. Instant heaters restrict flow on purpose so the element has time to warm the water, so the hot side may always feel a little weaker than the cold side. If the hot water is much weaker than the cold, the heater's internal filter or inlet may be partly blocked.
Storage (tank) heaters behave differently. They rarely restrict flow, but a failing internal component or a closed isolation valve on the heater can drop pressure. Never open a water heater yourself; the electrical and pressure risks are real. Switch it off and get it checked.
- Instant heater, hot weak but cold strong: often normal, but clean the heater's inlet filter if accessible.
- Both hot and cold weak at the shower only: look at the shower head and the mixer valve.
- Sudden loss of hot pressure: possible heater fault, book a service.
What about valves, stopcocks and the flat's main supply?
Every flat has valves that can throttle flow if they are not fully open. After any plumbing work, renovation, or a water heater install, a valve is sometimes left half closed by mistake. This is one of the easiest fixes and one of the most overlooked.
Check the angle valve behind or under the shower mixer, and check your flat's main stopcock (often near the kitchen or in a service duct). Turn each one anti-clockwise to open fully, then test. If the whole flat is weak, the main stopcock or the storage tank feed is the place to look.
- Angle valve at the shower: should be fully open, turned all the way anti-clockwise.
- Main stopcock for the flat: a half-turned stopcock starves every outlet.
- Older flats with a roof or ceiling storage tank: a low tank level or a stuck ball valve reduces pressure.
- Recent renovation: ask whether any valve was closed and not reopened.
Why did my pressure drop suddenly across the whole flat?
A sudden, flat-wide drop points to something upstream rather than a single fixture. Possible causes include PUB works or a temporary supply interruption in your block, a closed main valve, a burst or leaking pipe, or a failing booster pump in a condo or landed home that relies on one.
Check the PUB website or notices in your lift lobby for scheduled works. If neighbours are also affected, it is a building or supply issue and you should contact your town council, MCST or PUB rather than a private plumber. If only your unit dropped, it is internal and a plumber can trace it.
How do I get low shower pressure fixed properly?
If cleaning the head and checking the valves does not help, the problem is likely deeper: scaled or corroded internal pipes, a faulty mixer cartridge, a heater fault, or a pump issue. These need a licensed professional to diagnose safely, especially where water and electricity meet at the heater.
Our plumbing team handles exactly this in Singapore homes: diagnosing weak flow, replacing worn mixer cartridges and angle valves, servicing or swapping water heaters, and clearing or repiping blocked sections. A proper diagnosis avoids guesswork and stops you from replacing the wrong part. If your shower has been weak for a while or the whole flat is affected, booking a plumbing visit is the fastest route to a real answer.
Frequently asked questions
Is low water pressure ever a PUB fault in Singapore? Rarely for a single flat. Singapore's mains supply is strong and consistent, so a weak shower in one unit is almost always an internal issue with the head, valves, heater or pipes. A building-wide drop that affects neighbours can be a PUB or building matter.
Why is my hot water weaker than my cold water? Instant electric heaters deliberately limit flow so they can heat the water quickly, so a slightly weaker hot side is often normal. If the difference is large or worsens, the heater's inlet filter may be blocked or the unit may need servicing.
Can I fix low shower pressure myself? Often yes for the simple causes: clean or replace the shower head, straighten a kinked hose, and make sure the angle valve and main stopcock are fully open. If those do not work, or the heater or pipes are involved, call a licensed plumber.
Will a booster pump fix weak pressure in my HDB flat? Usually not needed and not always allowed. HDB and PUB have rules on pumps drawing directly from the mains, and most flats already have adequate pressure. Fix the actual cause first; a pump is rarely the right answer for a single weak shower.
