What is a data or network point?
A data point (also called a network point or LAN point) is a wall outlet with an RJ45 socket that connects to a network cable run back to a central location, usually where your router or a network switch sits. Plug an Ethernet cable from the wall into your TV, PC or console and you get a direct wired link.
In practice each point is a length of twisted-pair cable (typically Cat6) pulled through conduit from the outlet to your network cabinet or router corner, then terminated at both ends. The outlet face plate looks similar to a power socket but carries data, not mains electricity.
Why plan data points during renovation?
During renovation, cables run inside wall conduits and above false ceilings, so nothing is visible once the work is done. After renovation, adding a point usually means surface trunking along walls, drilling through finished surfaces, or accepting exposed cable, all of which look worse and cost more.

Where should you put data points in a Singapore home?

What cable and specification should you ask for?

Cat5e still works for basic gigabit, but the small cost difference makes Cat6 the safer choice today.
Ask for solid-core cable for the in-wall runs, proper RJ45 keystone terminations at both ends, and each cable labelled at the cabinet so you know which outlet is which. If you want higher speeds later, request Cat6A, but confirm the cost first as it is thicker and stiffer to install.
How much does data point installation cost in Singapore?
Pricing depends on the cable run length, the number of points, whether conduits already exist, and how the cable is routed. As a rough guide, expect a per-point range for supply, cabling and termination when done as part of a renovation, with the price per point usually dropping when several points are installed together.
Longer runs, ceiling access points, surface trunking after renovation, and a proper network cabinet all add to the total. Always get an itemised quote that states the cable type, number of points, terminations and any conduit or trunking, so you can compare fairly between contractors.
Who should install your data points?
Data cabling is low voltage, so it does not legally require a Licensed Electrical Worker the way mains wiring does.
