How much electrical supply does a home aircon actually need?

A single split unit serving one room draws roughly 0.5 to 1.5 kW while running, similar to a hair dryer on a low setting. A multi-split system serving three to five rooms can draw 2 to 4 kW or more when several indoor units run at once. The key figure is not just the running load but the starting surge, which can briefly spike two to three times higher.

For that reason, aircon condensers are almost always wired on their own dedicated circuit with a correctly rated breaker, not shared with wall sockets. This keeps the surge from tripping other circuits and lets the installer size the cable to the unit's full load.

Single-phase or three-phase: which supply do I have?

Larger landed houses and some big penthouses have a three-phase 400V supply, which spreads heavy loads across three lines and suits homes with multiple large systems, a lift, a pool pump or an EV charger.

You can get a rough idea by opening your distribution board. A single-phase board has one main switch feeding the circuits, while a three-phase board has a wider main switch and circuits grouped across three live lines. The practical question before an install is simple: does your board have a free slot, often called a spare way, for the new aircon circuit? When do I need to upgrade my electrical supply?

Most homeowners never need a full supply upgrade for aircon alone. You are more likely to need one only when the total demand of your home genuinely exceeds what your incoming supply and main fuse can carry, for example a large landed house adding a big system on top of an already heavy load.

Who is allowed to do aircon electrical work in Singapore?

In Singapore, fixed electrical wiring must be carried out by a Licensed Electrical Worker (LEW) licensed by the Energy Market Authority. Adding a new aircon circuit, fitting a breaker in your distribution board, or upgrading your supply is not DIY work, and doing it yourself is both unsafe and against the rules.
